Eastshore Aikikai Kenshusei Program
Purposes & objectives
- The goals of the Kenshusei program are:
- To establish a strong core of members in the dojo,
- To lift the spirit and the level of practice of all members,
- To provide an opportunity for a serious Aikido practitioner to strengthen and intensify his/her practice,
- To open the path to teaching, including qualifying as a professional instructor under qualifications established by the Shihankai of Birankai International,
- To assist the Chief Instructor in the care of the dojo.
Requirements
- Kenshusei must be prepared to commit to the following:
- Attend a minimum of 8 classes a week
- Train in Iaido
- Attend sitting meditation whenever it is offered
- Attend all seminars hosted by Eastshore Aikikai
- Attend two additional local seminars each year
- Support the practice of your fellow students by training at a Free Practice class once a month
Depending on initiation date, kenshusei are expected to attend the Instructors’ Seminar in February and Birankai North America Summer Camp. Kenshusei are required to participate in dojo management, provide administrative support, maintain and clean the dojo, coordinate dojo events, assist in classes, and participate in private lessons as requested by the Chief Instructor.
Failing any requirement or exhibiting disrespectful or unethical behavior as an Aikidoist may result in an individual’s expulsion from the program.
Application and fees
- An applicant for kenshusei must be a regular member of the dojo, no younger than 16, who holds the rank of 4th kyu or above. Applications may be made to the Chief Instructor at any time. An applicant should submit a letter to the Chief Instructor requesting admission to the program and stating the applicant’s reasons for applying and his/her training goals.
- Kenshusei dues are $95 per month.
